How does Citrix work? Citrix is one of a few companies that offer comprehensive virtualization solutions to companies. Citrix products are built around virtualization technologies. Citrix software basically deploys applications and resources on a central server and publishes them to remote devices. Using the virtualization technology, Windows applications can be published to non-Window devices. Moreover, resources can be accessed from anywhere, anytime and from any device. Before choosing Citrix, it is important to know how Citrix works.
How does Citrix work? – Overview
Citrix software virtualizes Windows applications, desktops and resources to publish them to remote users. Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly Citrix XenApp) is a virtual application delivery tool that isolates applications from the underlying OS and from other applications to improve its performance and compatibility. These applications are streamed from a centralized location into an isolated environment where they are executed on target devices. The application configuration, settings and files are copied to the client device.
To Remove the Citrix Receiver from a MAC that has an older version Citrix Receiver Client Removal and Installation for Windows and MAC Computers Rev 1.0 3/26/2015. I have a malfunctioning Citrix Receiver (v 4.1) on my laptop computer. When I click on hosted Apps the Receiver does not start and the Apps do not load. I have attempted to uninstall the Receiver (both through the Control Panel, and a program called CCleaner), however I am met with the message below.
When you use session virtualization, applications are delivered from hosting servers in the datacenter using application streaming. The user is then connected to the server to which the application is delivered. The application gets executed on the server and the server power is leveraged. While the server receives mouse clicks and keyboard strokes, it sends screen updates to the end-user device. With XenApp and session virtualization, Citrix enables Windows, MAC, iOS and Android devices to run Windows applications from Microsoft RDS. On the other hand, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop (formerly Citrix XenDesktop) is able to deliver full VDI desktops to any remote client device. Using HDX technology, it delivers a graphical experience to end-user systems. When you understand how does Citrix work, you can choose between session virtualization and VDI deployments.
There are multiple components involved in a Citrix virtualization infrastructure setup. For instance, Citrix Receiver is a client-software that provides access to XenApp/Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly Citrix XenApp) resources from any device. NetScaler provides load balancing, performs server offloading and makes applications run 5 times faster. StoreFront authenticates users to sites that host resources and provides self-service access to applications and desktops. Studio is a management console that lets you monitor and manage the entire infrastructure. Director is a web-based IT support tool. To publish applications and desktops through Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly Citrix XenApp), you have to configure all these components. Moreover, there are three XenApp editions that come with different features and pricing structures. You have to check out features offered by each edition. While it requires lot of time and effort to choose an edition, once you start to setup, the complexity in configuring multiple components and managing them is a challenge. Adding to this headache is the frequent name changes to Citrix products. Moreover, Citrix products are highly expensive. Not only should you understand how does Citrix work, but you should also check the pricing structure.

Citrix Receiver is a client software that is required to access applications and full desktops hosted on Citrix servers from a remote client device. This tool provides access to Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly Citrix XenApp)/Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop (formerly Citrix XenDesktop) installations from different types of client devices including iPhone, BlackBerry, Mac OS X, iPad, Windows, Linux, Windows Mobile, Android, Google Chromebook, thin clients, and embedded operating systems.
“Citrix Receiver” works with the HDX protocol built on top of the ICA protocol. The ICA protocol actually sends keyboard and mouse input to the remote server and receives screenshot updates on the client device. This traffic is handled by the Receiver. HDX protocol extends this procedure by providing a high definition experience of Windows applications to users working on many of most well-known devices. Citrix Receiver is available for different operating systems. When you visit the Citrix Receiver download page, it automatically detects the OS and prompts you with the correct client software to download. Citrix Receiver connects remote client devices to Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly Citrix XenApp), Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop (formerly Citrix XenDesktop), Citrix Access Gateway, XenVault Secure Storage, and other Citrix services.
Challenges with Citrix Receiver
As with every Citrix component, Receiver has gone through multiple changes. It was previously known as ICA Client. Before the release of Receiver, there were multiple client software components such as Secure Access Gateway Client, ICA Client, Password Manager Client, etc. Configuration and management of multiple products and components was a big challenge. Later, Citrix changed these components into plug-ins and combined them into one product called Citrix Receiver 1.0. With the release of Citrix 3.0, this product was split into Receiver Updater and Receiver Insider. It was again changed to Citrix Receiver Enterprise. The current product, Citrix Receiver 4.4, is now a suite of components including the web online plug-in and self-service plug-in. The combination of plug-ins varies with the client’s form factor and specifications.
While there are no performance issues with Citrix Receiver, the presence of multiple products and components is confusing. Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly Citrix XenApp) is available in different editions with different pricing and feature sets. Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktop (formerly Citrix XenDesktop) is also available in three editions. Customers have to scour through multiple products and features. Moreover, configuring these components is complex and time-consuming. Citrix software also comes with a high price tag and not many businesses can afford it.
The Parallels Client simplifies application delivery
Parallels Client is a simple tool that lets you access centrally hosted resources from any device, anytime and from any network. It is free to download and use. It uses SSL and second-level authentication, which means resources are securely transferred through the network. It works with every type of OS and platform, including iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, Linux, Mac, Google Chromebooks and BlackBerry. The Parallels Client leverages the Microsoft RemoteFX protocol to deliver a high definition user experience to remote clients. Parallels Client is the best alternative to the costly HDX protocol suite of technologies.
Parallels Remote Application Server (RAS) is a single package containing all virtualization components. Moreover, important components such as printer redirection and load balancing come auto-configured by default. It is simple and easy to deploy and use. It eliminates the challenges of managing multiple products, upgrade issues, and configuration complexities. Most importantly, it is inexpensive, with the lowest overall TCO when compared with Citrix and VMware products.
Lg. Parallels RAS makes the migration process easier with a free migration tool that automates most of Citrix Virtual Apps (formerly Citrix XenApp) use case scenarios. The migration tool extracts settings from Citrix XenApp 6.x into a file that can be imported from Parallels RAS Console.
